Hilda Goldwag Paintings of Glasgow
Nice article in The Herald about Hilda Goldwag who was a painter in Glasgow in the 1960's, best known for painting old buildings before they were due to be demolished. Apparently there is a revival in interest in her work and the Lillie Art Gallery in Milngavie has an exhibition of her work.

Usual Turner Prize moans and groans
This year's Turner Prize is to be announced on 5 December and according to Reuters, this years Turner Prize could be won by hummingbirds or buttocks. There's also a garden shed that was converted to a boat, sailed down a river then turned back into a garden shed (sounds like the winner to me). It's all terribly funny, and I do enjoy how people like to put their cravats on and go on TV decrying the death of art due to these exhibits. Great Fun.

Pittenweem Art Gallery
I was having a look through Pittenweem art gallery - Fisher Studio and Gallery - and noticed that a bunch of Pittenweem galleries are opening their doors with exhibitions for Christmas on Sat 5th November 2005. That could be well worth a look for some inspired Christmas presents.
Scottish Prints
I was having a search around for Scottish Prints today and found quite prominently a listing for a store selling them not 300 yards from my house. Scotch Corner are an online retailer selling all things Scottish, and it would appear they now do prints as well. I do like some of the mountain prints on their site - http://www.scottish-prints.co.uk/

Georgie Young and John Nelson Paintings
Aberfeldy Gallery in the lovely Perthshire town of Aberfeldy on the banks of the River Tay currently has an exhibition of paintings by Georgie Young and John Nelson from 17 September to 14 October 2005. Some great landscape paintings there. Do you really need an excuse to take a trip to Aberfeldy in the Autumn?
John Houston Paintings
The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh has an exhibition running just now by John Houston, the Fife born painter who paints these mad, bold landscapes that are overflowing with energy. Great stuff.

Jack Vettriano - Original Paintings
The Portland Gallery in London exclusively represents Jack Vettriano and if you want any information on him, theirs is the website to visit. They also have a Vettriano mailing list and news about next year's original paintings exhibition, TV appearances, press releases etc.
Update (May 2008) Thanks to Isabelle Delacroix - Jack Vettriano's PA - for the update. While the above was true in 2005 when this blog entry was made, all information about Jack Vettriano can now be found on his own website at www.jackvettriano.com.
Jack Vettriano - Singing Butler
I first saw Jack Vettriano's paintings in Kirkcaldy in 1996 which can't be long after his prints started to be published. I bought one of the prints from a Kirkcaldy picture framer - thought it was brilliant, and the framer filled me in on his background. Now that print has become probably the most popular in the UK and is hanging on everyone's wall. It seems that with popularity comes the media, and there is no-one the media likes to have a pop at more than Jack Vettriano. The Daily Record has run a story about him copying his most famous painting and in this BBC news piece he brushes it aside. Rightly so.
